Aunt Leah's House

Aunt Leah’s provides supported housing for teens, pregnant/parenting girls in foster care and homeless new moms and their babies. We also help youth who have “aged out” of care find housing.

About the Program (General): 

Aunt Leah's House is a licensed residential program for pregnant and parenting Aboriginal teen mothers. Aunt Leah's is dedicated to providing young mothers with a safe and comfortable home where they can begin to parent and adjust to the 
changes that are happening in their lives. We provide support and information so they can make plans for their future. We welcome extended family support.

About the Program (Kids): 

Aunt Leah’s House provides supported housing for pregnant and parenting teen moms under the age of 19 who are in the care of the Ministry. Moms live in a warm, home-like and supported setting throughout pregnancy and delivery, and can stay up to six months after the baby is born. Priority is given to aboriginal moms.

Who Is Eligible: 

Aunt Leah's House is open to:

  • Pregnant/parenting teens (with priority given to aboriginal teens)
  • Teen moms under 19 years of age who have custody of their baby who are presently in the care of the Ministry of Children and Family Development
What We Provide: 

Through Aunt Leah's House we connect participants to many community programs and resources, including:

  • Daily programming to develop parenting skills
  • Nobody's Perfect Parenting Program
  • Mother Goose Workshop
  • Outreach Worker
  • Aboriginal Infant Development Program (AIDP)
  • Mother-honouring ceremony
  • Cultural teachings
  • Nipissing District Developmental Screen (NDDS) - a tool to monitor your baby's development
  • Life skills assessment - helping Moms with their preparedness to successfully parent and live independently with their babies
Participants Receive: 
  • Individual Service Plan based on the mom's individuals strengths and abilities
  • Private furnished bedroom
  • Nutritional information, menu planning and cooking instruction
  • Monthly bus pass
  • Monthly clothing allowance
  • 24 hour on-site staff
  • Information and connections to community resources
  • Labour coaching with a Doula (a doula is a pregnancy, labour and birth coach and assistant)
  • Follow-up visits from a Community Health Nurse
  • Celebration and home coming for mom and baby
  • Baby Safe first aid
  • Breast feeding support
  • Assistance purchasing baby equipment and supplies
  • Opportunities to celebrate and grow as a mom and a woman
  • Baby sitting and respite care
  • Summer and winter holiday
  • Access to Aunt Leah's Pre-Employment Training Programs
  • Essential Skills Workshops
  • Weekly in-house workshops
  • A safe, comfortable, cheerful, supportive home for mom and baby, with supports for transitioning into independent living

This program meets the standards for Accreditation through CARF (Commission for the Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities) International.
